About The Roots and Wings Project

The Roots and Wings Project is a politically charged, socially transformative, project-based theatre company that brings attention to truth and provides stage and space for voices of the unnamed, unknown and misunderstood. Going strong for 20 years, the work is intersectional, uniting artists and audiences inside and outside of prison, across race, class, background, and artistic discipline. We create plays in traditional and site-specific spaces, disrupting biased narratives. The rehearsal and performance process is collaborative, incorporating the perspective of our world-class artists engaged in the work. We go deep into critical subject matter, written by globally renown, female-identified, BIPOC writers, collectively discovering the roots of story, conveying dramatically impactful work for both the artists and audiences alike. We offer arts education programming to people of all ages in schools, shelters, jails, arts institutes, and colleges, among other spaces.
