FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth Immersive Event - Main Image

Undershed, Bristol’s new immersive art gallery from Watershed, will open its next exhibition FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth created by award-winning UK artists ScanLAB Projects, on Friday 2 May. Created from thousands of daily 3D time-lapse scans of British landscapes captured over a year, the work bears witness to a planet in flux. Spread across multiple screens and taking over the whole gallery space, step into this haunting and meditative immersive artwork to explore a unique story of the impact of human industry and the immense forces of nature on our environment. From the movement of a single pebble on the beach, to the summer sun shining through leaves as they turn amber and fall, to the catastrophic retreat of an entire cliff, the installation and accompanying meditative soundscape offers a space to slow down and consider the future and devastating beauty of our rapidly changing planet. In addition to its merit as an artwork, the data collected and presented by FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth is ground-breaking scientific research. The vast dataset contains empirical evidence used by the British Geological Survey to perceive and investigate coastal erosion in a brand-new way. The results of the Innovate UK-funded research and development process continue to be used by researchers from universities and institutes across the UK. “We want our audiences to get lost inside these beautiful datasets, to be overwhelmed by the catastrophic retreat of an entire cliff in front of them, and to follow the movement of a single pebble on the beach beneath their feet,” said creator Matthew Shaw, co-founder of ScanLAB.

Audience Role

Taking over the whole of the Undershed gallery, this artwork uses both groundbreaking visuals and beautifully designed sound. On arrival, you will enter the welcome area before going onwards into the dark space of the gallery. Once inside, there are eight large screens spread out around the space. These screens are the only source of light and, while most are vertical, two lie on the floor and one hangs from the ceiling. Stand, sit, lie down, keep moving – the way you choose to focus on different details and moments is up to you. The piece runs as a 25-minute continuous loop,
