This October, Mystic Seaport Museum invites visitors aboard for a haunting homecoming two centuries in the making. What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship, a new immersive theatrical Halloween experience, unfolds across the Museum’s historic waterfront. Recommended for ages 8+. The story begins in October 1826, when the whaleship GRAMPUS set sail on a three-year whaling expedition. After a brutal storm in the North Atlantic, rations ran out, and a violent mutiny erupted on board. The GRAMPUS went adrift, and its ravenous crew was never heard from again—until now. Two hundred years later, the GRAMPUS has appeared at the seaport docks, and its rowdy, mutinous ghost whalers are looking for mischief, mayhem, and revenge. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1838 novel, “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket,” the experience involves thrilling performances, live music, wild storytelling, unexpected sound effects, and staged swashbuckling. The audience will meet a colorful cast of characters, each telling terrifying tales from their misadventures on the high seas over the past two centuries! This year the Museum worked with New York-based Clockjack Productions to reimagine this annual Halloween favorite. What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship brings the tale to life across the Museum’s historic waterfront. Wander at your own pace, following the stories and characters that draw you in—around every corner, ghostly whalers, eerie tales, and unexpected encounters build the suspense—the experience will be spine-tingling. For those craving an extra thrill, we dare brave adults and older kids to step inside The Haunted Factory and Captain Barnard’s House, where the mood grows darker, and the story takes a spookier turn. These optional indoor scenes let guests choose just how far into the mystery they dare venture—enter at your own risk. Spooky, swashbuckling, and full of surprises, What Lurks Beneath: Ghost Ship is recommended for ages 8 and up. Museum Members receive a discount on tickets.

About Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic Seaport Museum is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Founded in 1929 to gather and preserve the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past, the Museum has grown to become a national center for research and education with the mission to “inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience.” The Mystic Seaport Museum grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, Connecticut, and include a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities.
