Theatre Out Of The Shadows
Illuminating unknown classical plays by women in unexpected spaces
Year three of presenting classical plays by women in unusual spaces throughout York Region and now Toronto too. Merging three very different playwrights who shared similar stuggles becoming artists in their own right. From the controversial works of Sappho who took inspiration from her male and female lovers, to Okuni's gender-bending new wave of Japanese theatre called Kabuki, to Stein's outrageous take on female empowerment, this festival promises to deliver the classics like never before. Beginning at Unionville's iconic Varley Art Gallery, the three plays will unravel throughout the space. The following weekend, the festival travels to a rustic Queen St Storefront for round two. Which character will you follow, which character will you relate to, which character will you end up with? There's only one way to find out… COVID - Masks are optional, we ask that you sanitize your hands upon entry.
Audience Role
Audiences choose which character to follow based on an item they must select upon entry. In some instances, audience members become specific persons in the world of the play, usually they just co-exist with the characters.
