About Donna Oblongata
Privy Privy, by artists Donna Oblongata and Patrick Costello, is an immersive installation that simulates a public restroom in a queer nightclub. Each stall of the installation features a glory hole, through which comes an actual human hand holding an ice cream cone. Visitors may get on their knees and indulge in this anonymously proffered treat, or simply watch others enjoy themselves. For those who choose to indulge, it's an unexpected encounter with a stranger, resulting in a moment of sweetness. Amongst a maelstrom of anti-queer legislation nationally, Privy Privy turns the dominant culture's predatory and homophobic definition of obscenity on its head. Through this public invitation to indulgence without shame (what's more innocent and universal than enjoying an ice cream cone?) we create a space for a future where we might realize the liberatory potential of communal pleasure.
