The Edinburgh Dungeon takes the worst things that ever happened in Scotland and stages them underground, in the dark, with actors who are enjoying themselves far too much. Eleven live shows run back to back across a single walkthrough, wired together with 360-degree sets, special effects and a very Scottish streak of black comedy. Sawney Bean's clan waits in the Cannibal's Cave. Burke and Hare are doing brisk trade in fresh corpses for the anatomy schools. You will be hauled before a seventeenth-century courtroom, found guilty, and passed on to the resident torturer to have your sentence explained in detail. Nobody is chased or touched, and the humour undercuts the horror throughout — this is theatre rather than a scare maze. Small groups enter on timed slots every fifteen minutes and the full route takes about seventy-five minutes. The Dungeon also stages seasonal shows and limited-run events through the year, including festival and Halloween programming. Check the ticket link to see what's on when you visit.
Audience Role
You are cast as a condemned prisoner. The Dungeons address their audience as "traitors" and "peasants": your group is led underground, put on trial in the courtroom, singled out by actors for questioning, and sentenced. Participation is invited rather than compulsory, and anyone who would rather not be picked on can hang back.
