Malden, MA
The Curious Case of the Fiery Temper
An interactive 1935 historical murder mystery pub crawl
What to Expect In this noir detective adventure pub crawl– inspired by the writings of Malden-born Erle Stanley Gardner and some real Malden history– you and your companions will be taking on the role of private investigators. You will visit four different bar/restaurant locations and meet a host of interactive characters, and interview them. Many of them will have pen & paper puzzles that you can solve to further unlock clues about the case. At the end of your adventure, by analyzing the clues and motive, means, and opportunity, you will try and identify who is the culprit! Story Overview It's August 3, 1935 in Malden, MA. There have been a rash of fires that have burned down several homes and businesses in the city's Suffolk Square neighborhood. In the most recent fire, police found a body. The victim was named Shamus Temper. He was a WWI veteran and partner in Temper & Marks Investigations (or TMI), a Private Detective agency. He left behind a cryptex that his coworkers can't crack, but his partner Harry Marks believes it will contain a key to a safety deposit box that contains evidence regarding some crime he had been investigating. TMI has reached out to your group, another private investigation firm. Typically, your agencies are rivals, but for this case, you need to work together. You're meeting up with TMI's administrator, Madison Sykes, to get the details of the case that will let you begin your investigation. Player Roles The players (up to 8 in a group) are all Private Investigators from their own firm (they make up the name of it). They'll be given very simple character cards with roles. Timing and Logistics You and your group members will sign up for a specific start-time. Start times are staggered by 20 minutes, which allows you to move from location to location to meet the characters and solve their challenges before another group comes along. We encourage you to patronize the various establishments, but not linger too long in any one place or you may run out of time to complete the mystery. If you run into another group already talking with our characters, please allow them some time to complete their interactions before approaching. When you have collected all of the clues, you can return to your starting location and decide how the story ends! COVID-19 Safety Please adhere to the safety protocols outlined by each location you visit; bring a mask in case it is required by the venue. All of our staff are vaccinated and will put on a mask when requested. FREE Parking Free parking at the city garages at 170 Centre St or 7 Jackson St Age Restrictions This interactive mystery is not recommended for children under the age of 14, as the subject matter involves a lot of intrigue with adult themes– much like a Perry Mason novel! Ultimately, you know your kids better than us and we trust you to make decisions that are suitable for them. Costumes Costumes for the event are not required, though Pub Crawl staff will be dressed in 1935-appropriate clothing. If you enjoy dressing up, we encourage you to do so!
