The Amsterdam Dungeon

The Inquisition, the Flying Dutchman and 500 years of Amsterdam's worst behaviour — staged inside an old church.

The Amsterdam Dungeon Immersive Event - Main Image

The Amsterdam Dungeon stages five hundred years of the city's dark history inside a genuine old church on the Rokin — a building where excavation turned up two hundred graves beneath the floor before the attraction was even built. Live actors run a sequence of shows back to back: the Descent, the Torture Chamber, the Spanish Inquisition, the Council of Blood, a witch burning, the Flying Dutchman, and a murder on the Zeedijk. Sets are built out in 360 degrees with special effects, and the tone swings between genuinely tense and very funny. Groups of up to thirty enter every fifteen minutes and the route takes around an hour. Tours run in Dutch and in English — you choose which when you arrive. Actors may pick you out, but nothing is arranged in advance and nobody is obliged to take part; performers never chase or touch you. Seasonal shows and special programming run at points through the year. Check the ticket link for what's on when you visit.

Audience Role

You are cast as an accused citizen hauled in front of the Inquisition and the Council of Blood. Your group is led through the building in sequence, questioned, judged and condemned. Actors may invite or pick out individuals, but this is never arranged in advance and nobody is obliged to participate.
