Shapes of Becoming

The ninth edition of the Jing’an International Sculpture Project (2026 JISP) brings together 33 artist groups from 14 countries across Jing’an Sculpture Park and public spaces throughout the district. Curated by Cheng Jing, with UCCA Lab as the curatorial institution, “Shapes of Becoming” looks at the evolving possibilities of sculpture as artificial intelligence reshapes our understanding of the real, the virtual, and the generated. The exhibition ranges from stone and metal to light, sound, moving image, and digital media, to return to what makes sculpture physical: its materiality, scale, weight, and relationship to the body and its surrounding reality taking shape. Participating artists include Olafur Eliasson, Tony Cragg, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Lindy Lee, Marinella Senatore, Liu Wei, Sun Yitian, Timur Si-Qin, and Marshmallow Laser Feast, among others. Across 36 works, nearly 60% are by international artists and close to 70% are newly commissioned for this year’s JISP. “Shapes of Becoming” marks the second consecutive edition of JISP curated by UCCA Lab of UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, and will be on view at Jing’an Sculpture Park and public sites across Jing’an, Shanghai.
