Sanctuary
Sanctuary is a site-specific, multimedia piece to activate the architecture of Redeemer West Side.
Lindsey Hanson’s site-specific and multimedia dance piece Sanctuary activates the modern architecture of her church, Redeemer West Side, with dancers from Lindsey Hanson Collective performing amid, over and sometimes under the pews. The dance piece explores themes of connection and perspective, and the slow or sudden ways both can shift. After a year of us practicing physical distance due to the pandemic, Sanctuary invites us to consider how we engage with the spaces around us and how we interact with one another. Through dance, Sanctuary suggests the new life that can invigorate a worship space and the ways we can connect with spirituality. Note: this is a two-part multidisciplinary arts experience that involves the audience walking around, sitting and standing, and going up and down stairs. If you have accessibility needs, please email us at W83.Gallery@RedeemerWS.com. This program is made possible through a Vital Worship Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc.

About Lindsey Hanson Collective
Sanctuary is a site-specific, multimedia piece utilizing dance performed live and captured on film to activate the modern architecture of Redeemer West Side. Sanctuary is a lightly interactive piece, and audiences will be invited to view the work and space from multiple perspectives. The dancers of Lindsey Hanson Collective perform in conversation with the church’s sanctuary--interacting with the pews, aisles, and walls to a meditative soundscape. After over a year of social distancing due to COVID-19, Sanctuary explores themes of human connection and shifting perspectives. The dancers’ engagement with the space challenges and broadens the conventions of what church, worship, and spirituality can mean beyond brick and mortar walls.
