Night Market for a Future Garden
A night market stall reimagining a lost Chinatown garden through archival images, community stories and visitor memories, connecting a vanished past to a future garden.
China Court once stood on Spadina Avenue from 1976 to 1986—a garden complex of pavilions, bridges and storefronts in the heart of Chinatown. It's gone now, but not forgotten. "Night Market for a Future Garden" brings it back for one night. Designed as a night market vendor stall, the installation invites visitors to browse archival photographs, watch historic footage and encounter stories about the garden and the community that shaped it. Viewers can add their own stories through sharing a memory, leaving a note, or marking what they once saw, felt or heard here. Together, we reconstruct China Court in shared imagination. The project also looks ahead to a future Asian Garden planned for the Chinese Cultural Centre. What should it recall? What should it carry forward?
