Who is this workshop for? Playful Pretenders - People looking for an opportunity to play and create freely, while learning a little bit about how theatre gets made. World Builders - Anyone looking for tools to help them imagine and share their own worlds with other people. Immersive Creators - Artists making immersive or participatory experiences, looking for an opportunity to hone their craft. About Making Worlds You Can Live In: Across all forms of media there is a growing interest in crafting compelling worlds that people wish they could inhabit. From tabletop roleplaying games, to series fandom, virtual reality, brand activations and more, people are excited at the opportunity to experience living in a world that is different from our own. “Playing pretend” is a natural human impulse that we often lose the opportunities for as we get older, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In this workshop, participants will work together to imagine and build their own worlds, and create ways for other people to experience what it’s like to live in them. This workshop is also an opportunity for artists interested in immersive and participatory work to explore new tools and methods, and practice what they already know. This workshop is co-created and led by Applied Mechanics, leaders in the immersive theatre movement, and a cornerstone of the Philadelphia performance community; As well as Obvious Agency, one of Philadelphia’s premier playable theatre companies. Facilitator Headshots and Bios Daniel Park - Daniel Park is a queer, bi-racial, theatre and performance artist, movement facilitator, and organizer for racial and labor justice in the cultural sector. Through all of the above, his work brings people together to understand and experiment with their individual and mutual roles in bringing about the liberation of all people. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2014 Daniel has become a leader for radical thought in the local creative ecosystem and a trusted national source for guidance on the intersection between cooperatives and the arts. Daniel has self-produced multiple major works, co-founded the worker cooperative Obvious Agency (www.obvious-agency.com), created commissions for institutions such as the Barnes Foundation and Moore College of Art and Design, and taught anti-oppressive creation methodology at the University of the Arts. He was the recipient of a 2024 NTP grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts and a 2022 Art Works Grant from the Philadelphia Foundation and Forman Arts Initiative. Daniel has provided his services as a facilitator and consultant nationally with organizations such as Creatives Rebuild New York, The PA Governor’s Commission on Asian American Affairs, ArtPlace America, and many others. Daniel was also instrumental as an organizer and recruiter for Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists, a community group that brings together folks of pan-Asian descent involved in the performing arts. ASH ASH (they/all/we) is a writer and interdisciplinary artist. The work they create interrogates language, imagery, and linear time. They write picture books, short stories, novels and poetry in response to the world(s) they see around and within them. They strive to facilitate intentional spaces of bravery, vulnerability and joy making. As a performer Severin has appeared on stage at InterAct, Orbiter 3, Simpatico, PolyGlamourous, Philadelphia Artists Collective, Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists, CCTC, Theatre Exile, StageWest, People’s Productions, Alma’s Engine and in exhibition at the PMA.
