James Turrell: Third Breath

James Turrell's colourful lighting experience Skyspace comes to life during sunset. Natural and artificial light meet at dusk and mutate the sky into a colour surface that seems to close down the room from the sky and yet is the sky itself. The artwork, entitled "Third Breath," links two perceptual rooms — Skyspace and Camera Obscura — and allows visitors a completely new visual experience. Third Breath is a two-story architecture in outdoor space, nearly 14 meters high, standing immediately next to the Centre for International Light Art in the former Lindenbrauerei. The building is connected underground to the museum. Visitors first enter the dark room of a Camera Obscura, which mirrors the sky onto a circular white surface on the floor. Stairs lead up to the so-called Skyspace, where a white domed roof opens to the sky through a hole in the ceiling. Between May and October each year, an illumination at dusk makes the sky above Unna sensually experienceable in a unique way. The museum can only be visited as part of an expert-led guided tour.
