James Turrell: Tewlwolow Kernow

Tewlwolow Kernow (Cornish for "Twilight in Cornwall") is an underground elliptical domed chamber which James Turrell has designed as a space from which to view the sky, especially at twilight. Visitors approach through a circular seating antechamber, then through a narrow door into a low and dark space, before opening out suddenly into bright height — an oval chamber, open to the sky, with a bench running around the edge. Tewlwolow Kernow is best seen at dawn or dusk, when background illumination under-lights the ceiling of the Skyspace and provides a subtle contrast with the sky. The shifting balance between the interior and exterior light provides a contemplative and hypnotic experience. Tremenheere is the only place in Europe to host two works by James Turrell, alongside Aqua Oscura. The Sculpture Gardens close for the winter each year, from early November until mid-February.
