Skyspace I, created in 1974, was James Turrell's first Skyspace — the origin of a series he would go on to install in more than 26 countries. It is installed in the converted service wing (former stables) of Villa Panza, alongside other environmental works Turrell designed specifically for these spaces, experimenting with color and light, as well as installations by Robert Irwin and Maria Nordman. Villa Panza also holds the largest continuously exhibited collection of Dan Flavin's work. The 18th-century villa and its 33,000-square-meter gardens are a FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) property, bequeathed by collectors Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza di Biumo in 1996.

About Villa Panza (FAI)

Villa Panza (Villa e Collezione Panza) is an 18th-century villa in Varese, Italy, bequeathed to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) by collectors Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza di Biumo in 1996. Surrounded by 33,000 square meters of gardens, the villa houses one of the world's foremost collections of American light and space art, including environmental site-specific works by Dan Flavin, Robert Irwin, and James Turrell in its converted stable-block galleries.
