James Turrell: Open Sky

Light itself is presented as art in James Turrell's work. Open Sky (2004) is on view during the museum's regular opening hours, but a special sunset viewing, Night Program, is also available. Chichu Art Museum was constructed in 2004 as a site rethinking the relationship between nature and people. The museum was built mostly underground to avoid affecting the beautiful natural scenery of the Seto Inland sea, designed by Tadao Ando. Despite being primarily subterranean, the museum lets in an abundance of natural light that changes the appearance of the artworks and the ambience of the space itself with the passage of time, throughout the day and all along the four seasons of the year. Open Sky Night Program (by reservation only) James Turrell's Open Sky installation can be viewed at any time during museum open hours, but you can also enjoy the serenity of a special 45-minute sunset viewing (Night Program). This program consists of a 45 minutes viewing of James Turrell's Open Sky at sunset. The program is viewed seated. Please note that you will be exposed to outdoor climatic conditions through the opening in the ceiling. Please refrain from leaving in the middle of the program. To ensure an optimal viewing environment, please refrain from joining with under-school-age children (under age 6), or a group of more than 9 people. Dates: Fridays and Saturdays (program starting time is an estimate of sunset). Time Required: Approx. 80 minutes, including time to assemble at the ticket center and go to and from the installation. Group Size: 30 persons. Advance reservation with date and time is required for museum admission. If online tickets are sold out, there will be no on-site sales on the day.
