James Turrell: Milk Run Sky
A "library of light" over a reading room's bookshelves, free to visit
Milk Run Sky is installed in the Home Gallery, the light-filled reading room at the heart of Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, directing a "library of light" over the bookshelves designed by Marina Abramović for her adjacent work, Library for Human Use. Turrell drew inspiration for the piece from his own experience as a pilot flying the "milk run" home after collecting fresh milk: when fog filled the air and the sun lit up the outskirts between layers of cloud covering the plane, it seemed to bring about a beautiful light. This work was produced with that scene in mind. By day, the space is bathed in blue light; every evening from 7:30 to 7:45pm, visitors can enjoy the color of the light slowly changing over fifteen minutes. Milk Run Sky is part of the museum's free public spaces, alongside Yayoi Kusama's Early Spring Rain and Tatsuo Miyajima's Opposite Vertical on Pillar. No photography is permitted inside the reading room.
