James Turrell: Greet the Light

Greet the Light is James Turrell's 76th Skyspace and the second to be located within a Quaker meetinghouse, following his earlier installation at Live Oak Friends Meeting in Houston. The title refers to Turrell's grandmother's instruction, in his Quaker youth, to "go inside and greet the Light." The Skyspace features cove lighting Turrell designed to interact with natural light, creating a dynamic visual sequence that challenges perceptions of light, color, and space, timed specifically to correlate with sunrise or sunset. Evening viewings begin at sunset and last about 50 minutes; morning viewings begin roughly 50 minutes to an hour before sunrise. If the roof cannot be opened due to cold temperatures, high humidity, or precipitation, Turrell's closed-roof lighting sequence runs instead. Seating is limited and advance reservation is required. The viewing schedule varies by season and is not offered during Sunday worship services; the Skyspace is closed from January 1 through late March. Photography, food, and beverages are not permitted in the meeting room.
