"Blue Pearl – Skyspace" by James Turrell is an elliptical, walk-in cylinder open to the sky on the Mönchsberg in Salzburg. The artwork is a large, elliptical room with benches along the interior walls, whose roof opening provides a direct view of the sky. Through the use of subtle artificial lighting and changing daylight, the piece transforms the section of sky into a living sculpture of light and space. James Turrell is an American artist regarded as a leading figure in the Light and Space movement. Since the 1960s, he has been working on Skyspaces, interior spaces with roof openings that allow viewers to experience natural and artificial light phenomena. His most famous long-term project is probably Roden Crater in Arizona, a former volcano transformed into an observatory-like work of light art. Blue Pearl is particularly impressive at dawn and dusk. It is the fourth work in Salzburg's Walk of Modern Art, located near the Museum der Moderne, and is freely accessible as part of the surrounding public space.

About Museum der Moderne Salzburg

Museum der Moderne Salzburg occupies two locations: the Rupertinum in the heart of Salzburg's old town, and the Museum der Moderne on the Mönchsberg, overlooking the city. Both venues show temporary exhibitions of international and Austrian art of the present and classical modernism, alongside a focus on graphic collections and Austrian photography after 1945. Outside the Mönchsberg building, public artworks including James Turrell's "Blue Pearl – Skyspace" are part of Salzburg's Walk of Modern Art, freely accessible in the public space surrounding the museum.
