Fujiko Nakaya's permanent fog sculpture in the pond beside Guggenheim Bilbao's riverfront facade
Fujiko Nakaya pioneered fog as a sculptural medium. The work represents her approach as "a subtle collaboration with water, atmosphere, air currents, and time itself." The piece was commissioned for the museum's opening retrospective of Robert Rauschenberg, with "F.O.G." standing for "Frank O. Gehry." The sculpture activates hourly, on the hour, for 8 minutes, during operating hours. Medium: Water fog generated by 1,000 fog nozzles and high-pressure pump/motor system.
