EXPLORIA
A full-scale 1920s Berlin quarter, played out with live actors inside Europe's largest escape room.
Step through the portal on a former colliery site in Bottrop and you land in a 1920s Berlin quarter built at full scale — shopfronts, a market square, a bank, a post office, a hotel, a fashion boutique, and residents who never break character. EXPLORIA is billed as Europe's largest escape room, but it plays more like a living city: hundreds of puzzles and props are scattered across the set, and what happens next depends on what you and everyone else do with them. There are two ways in. A Zeitticket is free roam — no fixed story, no route, no clock beyond the hours you book. You wander, talk to the residents, take on jobs, trade, solve whatever catches your eye, and earn Reichsmark you can spend on food and drink inside the city or bank for a future visit. Up to 200 people can be in the city at once, each writing their own thread through the same world. A Missionsticket hands you a brief at the gate instead. Missions run roughly 60 to 120 minutes for groups of two to sixteen and come in several flavours: a hotel disappearance in "Das Verschwinden der Isabella Strauß", a gang showdown in "Duell der Ganoven", tarot cards and a sinister cult in "Stimmen aus der Anderswelt", a two-part time-travel arc across "Tiefen der Zeit" and "Geister der Vergangenheit", a jewel heist in "Die Rote Baronin", and a manhunt in "Der Nachtfalter". Each mission has its own symbol in the city, so you always know which puzzles belong to your story. Either way you are never on your own. The residents — actors in period dress with wooden name badges — nudge you along, hand out hints, complicate things, and react to what you do. There is no script and no fixed ending; players change the story by acting on it. Progress and earnings are saved, so a return visit picks up where the last one left off, and the set keeps growing. Costume is optional but rewarded: turn up dressed for the twenties and you get cashback at the till, and the in-city boutique will lend you something if you arrive in street clothes. Most experiences can also be played in English. EXPLORIA sits inside the ELORIA – Erlebnisfabrik, a 6,000 m² experience factory in the listed washhouse of the old Prosper II colliery, alongside a bar and lounge, a beer garden and a handful of other attractions.
