Essentials of Inter-Acting (with a performance opportunity)
Learn performance techniques to transform audience members into main characters! Attend any of the first 3 sessions as a drop-in workshop, or register for the full course and practice your skills with a workshop performance: Detention.
Empower audiences to not just see the story.... but LIVE it! In these workshops you'll learn performance techniques that transform audience members into main characters! This goes way beyond the typical level of engagement in immersive theater (although the techniques are still useful in that style of work as well). Think The Truman Show (or the 2023 TV show, Jury Duty) if Truman (or Ronald) knowingly opted into their fictional reality. This workshop series is built on Jeff Wirth's foundational techniques, adapted from the curriculum he lays out in his new book Interactive Performance 101, and the work of the interactive Deep Dive, a 9-month training program lead by Jeff. The workshop is taught by Christy Casey who was a member of the Deep Dive, and has been creating immersive experiences around the country over the last decade. Check out this article series in The Verge to read more about the Deep Dive's work and the kind of interactive experiences these techniques make possible: bit.ly/SimulifeDiaries. Students of this 5-week course will have the opportunity to put the skills they learn into action by performing in a workshop production of a brand new interactive experience: Detention (it'll be kinda like The Breakfast Club... but immersive). Don't worry. You don't have to look like a teenager to apply. At least in this play test production, casting will be age blind. Can't commit to the full course? Attend any (or all) of the first 3 weeks as drop-In workshops (11/9, 11/16, 11/23)! When: Sundays November 9th, 16th, and 23rd 11am-2pm: Technique Workshops (open to drop-in participants) Sundays November 30th & December 7th 11am-2pm: Closed Rehearsals Friday December 12th 12-3:30pm: Invited Dress Rehearsal Sunday December 14th 12-3:30pm: Workshop Performance If these dates/ times don't work for you, we'd love for you to still submit. There's a field where you can share your availability to for our team to consider in future workshop planning.
Audience Role
This is a course, so those who register are students... both literally and in this case as their characters in the workshop performance. The participants (aka "audience") in the workshop performance will also play students in Detention.
