End of Story with Ian Kelso
Workshop on the usefulness and meaningfulness of storytelling as it evolve with new technologies.
Why do we tell stories? What are they good for? There can be no doubt that the techniques and technologies for storytelling have changed dramatically over the past few thousand years. And they have continued to change at an exponential rate over the past few hundred. This workshop will take a long perspective on both the usefulness and meaningfulness of storytelling as it evolved as a result of our ingenuity in creating new technologies to help our species survive and thrive. These technologies have constantly changed the nature of the way we think and the way we live. But the last 27 years since the birth of the commercial internet have unleashed an unprecedented number of new ways to tell stories. And as we cross the threshold into the “metaverse” we may be heading toward an even more dramatic shift in what will be possible. It’s the end of story as we know it, but also the beginning of a new era of communications that may look as much or more different to us in 20 years as would a 30 second commercial to a Neanderthal.

About The Festival of Live Digital Art
The Festival of Live Digital Art (FOLDA) is produced by Spiderwebshow Performance. FOLDA aims to increase the rigour of live digital performance as it becomes more pervasive. We want to show what is possible, provoke critical analysis, and share approaches that encourage experimentation. 2022 is the fifth iteration of FOLDA and marks a return to Kingston, Ontario after two years of online presentation. Founded in 2018 by Sarah Garton Stanley, Michael Wheeler, and Adrienne Wong, the curatorial vision seeks new and innovative ways of supporting digital practice. FOLDA 2019 featured a deep collaboration with HowlRound Theatre Commons on the Digital+Performance Convening: a gathering of 100 artists from the United States and Canada sharing perspectives and approaches to digital performance and creation. In 2020, FOLDA partnered with the National Arts Centre of Canada – English Theatre, City of Kingston, the Canada Council for the Arts, HowlRound Theatre Commons, National Theatre School of Canada, and York University to produce and present The Green Rooms. The Green Rooms were fueled with spirited conversations with leaders in fields such as climate activism, ecological economy and environmental humanities, as well as with theatre artists and leaders who have found innovative ways to engage with the climate crisis. Performances were performed 100% online and our partners at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and Luminato amplified FOLDA livestreams, garnering over 34,000 views worldwide. FOLDA 2021 was also presented online, with performances on Zoom, in Altspace VR, SMS, and custom websites.
