Chiharu Shiota: In the Light of Memory

Chiharu Shiota: In the Light of Memory offers a comprehensive view of Chiharu Shiota's wide-ranging practice centered on "memory and existence," themes she has pursued continuously throughout her career. The exhibition brings together human experiences and emotions such as life and death, memory and disappearance, meeting and parting, woven into a large-scale installation of hundreds of thousands of threads, alongside video works, thread-and-glass sculptures, and drawings. HEREDIUM Director Ham Seon-Jae said, "Chiharu Shiota is an artist who has connected personal memories, relationships between people, and, further, the world through red thread," adding, "Through this exhibition, we hope visitors will encounter works newly woven upon the time held by the city of Daejeon and by HEREDIUM, and have a special artistic experience that prompts each person to reflect on their own memories and existence." The exhibition is notable for unfolding across two venues: HEREDIUM and Artsite Soje. Set within HEREDIUM, a restoration of the former Daejeon branch building of the Oriental Development Company constructed in 1922, and Artsite Soje in Soje-dong, which retains the time and traces of Daejeon's old downtown, the show presents a new work by Shiota that links histories accumulated in place with personal memory.
