Carnal Spill
We won't lay down and be quiet.
Carnal Spill is the newest dance in choreographer Carrie Ahern's Sex Status series that seeks to expose what is considered most private about women's experience in modern life. This time, the focus is on the language women use and receive during the act of sex. Carnal Spill invites the audience to consider how verbal language, cliche, fantasy, and the stories we tell ourselves operate inside of sexual play. How does our relationship to words evoke erotic connection or disconnection; turn-on or shame? What is it about our fantasy life that can expand our reality? As with the rest of the Sex Status canon, the work is performed in private homes that will be open to the public. Co-Created with dancers Jennifer Chin, Donna Costello, Carolyn Hall, Elke Rindfleisch, Bennalldra Williams, Carnal Spill uses text written by Ahern and collaborator Vanessa DeWolf alongside improvised storytelling and word games in tandem with rich sensorial movement. The work features a live exploration with composer Anne Heges homemade instrument, the tape machine, which performers will speak into and control but remains an unpredictable element, like the fates spinning ones future. Lighting design will be tailored for each of the two homes by Jay Ryan. This performance will be hosted at a private homes in Midtown Manhattan (May 12 -14) and in Brooklyn, NY (May 18-21).
