Being Future Being
Movement, story, + sound in a kinetically rich social architecture centering Indigenous experience.
World Premiere / BroadStage Commission “a magnetic performer, adept at mobilizing people, onstage and off” — The New York Times Created by choreographer and writer Emily Johnson, who belongs to the Yup’ik Nation, and featuring a score by Pulitzer Prize-winning Diné composer Raven Chacon, Being Future Being is an evening-length performance that integrates movement, images, story, and sound in a kinetically rich social architecture that centers Indigenous thrivance. This is a pay-what-you-choose performance. BroadStage is on the ancestral unceded territory of the Gabrielino, Tongva, and Kizh people. As a tangible action that acknowledges the history and colonial occupation of the land on which we reside, a portion of all ticket sales will be offered to a Los Angeles-based, Indigenous-led organization that works to revitalize Indigenous ways of being and knowing. If you can, please consider paying a higher ticket price, which will include admission to the performance and what we will consider at this point as a symbolic/nominal land usage fee. All ticket prices provide the same general admission access to the show. In her newest creation, choreographer Emily Johnson builds on a decade of profound, immersive, and award-winning work engaging audiences in shared experiences of movement, place, history, and collective action. An artist of the Yup’ik Nation, Johnson centers Indigenous knowledges and perspectives in both her layered, multisensory works and in her land protective efforts, fostering a deeper relationship to the land we inhabit through her performance works. Being Future Being, with a score by Pulitzer Prize-winning Diné composer Raven Chacon, delves into the power of creation—revealing the potential of who we might become.
